In 2007 he fell victim to an unfortunate tractor accident, which though sad is also incredibly ironic since he was possibly of the most most skilled person to drive one of those monsters. In fact, he'd been operating tractors and other heavy machinery since the tender age of ten and in one occasion was pulled over for operating said machinery without proper documentation. Anyways, lets cut to the chase.

First let me start by saying I am not an overly emotional being and this is not meant to be an emotional post. Instead, its merely an observation of my reaction towards death and how I've learned to cope with with accepting my impending demise. The early years of my life had be spent in such a polished, monitored and highly censored environment that I did not fully grasp the concept of death until around age eight. That was when my grandmother passed away, an event that had left my entire mother's family visibly shaken. I, however, was unsure of the situation at the time. I asked my mom what's wrong with Ma and she explained to me she went to an eternal sleep. A few days later I remember being in my room, thinking of what was told and suddenly, gushed with emotions and cried deeply for what felt like hours.

I had finally conceptualized life and death, the basics of the cycle of existence. As I got older I became fascinated with it. I constantly questioned these polar opposites in the spectrum of life. I wondered why people chose to live when they lived such poor, painful lives. Similarly I questioned why people chose to end their lives even though they seemed to have it all.

No one, not my mother, father, teachers or friends could ever answer these questions. But then again, I'd never dare ask such questions least I be discipled the "Guyanese way" for such nonsense. However soon before I knew it, my curiosity got the better of me.

See my father, being more or less a prominent community figure in his time had, since the 80s felt it was his personal duty to serve as an unofficial protector of the neighborhood. At least this was his reasoning for owning several guns. He had practically never used them apart from maybe firing one once in an effort to protect a neighbor from her drunken son. But nonetheless they would lie there in a small safe hidden in the back of the closet in my parents' room. When I discovered them I found myself constantly "playing" with them. Such simple, deadly weapons. One day, amid my neitzscheistic thoughts I wondered what death would feel like. I went into the closet like I've done hundreds of times, pulled out a gun and placed it at my head like I've seen in the movies. I thought for a second and wondered what it would feel like firing it straight first. I aimed at my bedroom's door, closed an eye and fired. The kick back was so intense, my weak hands were instantly numb and buzzing. My ear was painfully echoing from the eternal reverb of the ringing buzz. My lungs felt as if it was closing in, my eyes peppered with the sting of burned gun powder. Basically, that single shot had left me with an uncanny fear of guns since then. Oh and if you were wondering there was a solid hole through my door.

After that experience I chose to bury these impulses and urges to understand death and instead, live and think like a normal child. This lasted a few successful years. I completely my primary school studies(grade school American equivalent), earned a spot at the most prestigious Secondary school in the nation(Queen's College) and even spend a few summers touring with my father(he was the captain of a Freight Liner for an international shipping company).

However, on March 19, 2001 my life was forever changed. It was elections day in Guyana and as policy, I didn't have school. A year prior my father suffered a heart attack and required a triple bypass surgery. He moved back to Guyana to recuperate but the only thing that seemed to follow was stress. A recent split between him and his brothers had resulted in bad blood among each other. This day specifically one of his brothers visited. They're conversation quickly turned sour and soon each were in a violent fight. I was just waking up, still sleepy as I investigated the argument. By the time I intervened my uncle had left. My father was breathing heavy but assured me he was fine. I went out to the patio to stretch when I heard a loud thud. I ran back to find my father lying there, another heart attack! I called the 911, my neighbor, my mother, everyone I can think of. He stuttered his last words out to me, "I love you son" and died in my arms. That night I cried myself to sleep, woke up in tears next to my mother and cried myself to sleep again. I did not eat for a week and at that very moment, hated the world for it's unfairness.

My siblings felt the same way, evident by my brothers' vicious attack against my uncle on the last night of my father's wake. To me, at that very moment, it felt the world had gone man and we were the only sane individuals left(though quite the opposite). The next day I found myself venting my anger in a speech infront my father's casket. I still remember staring at the body, ghastly white and cold to the touch. I remember constantly saying, "this is not my father, my father is not dead...please way up dad, please let this be a dream..." I had cried every last tear and felt as if I had purged my entire soul in the process. I'd been a front seat passenger in the death of my father and saw it all. Even today its still fresh in my mind.

However, within mere a week of my father's passing my grand father(my mother's father) died. My mother was shattered. Two of the greatest men in her life had passed within 5 days of each other. I on the other hand had found myself unable to express any emotion of grievance.....

To be continued

Summer Cool: Fat Boy Slim - Gangster Tripping

This morning I was heading back home from an AMAZING night with close friends. Sober and refreshed I was set for the 2+ hour trek back home with my trusty ipod and my yet-to-finish-reading copy of Dashiell Hammett's "Red Harvest." Now normally I like to enjoy these walk of shame back home without any distractions but I was so energized from the night before(ironically enough since I passed out for a good few in between shots and birthday sing-songs) I just had to have a sensory overload.

My ipod was set to shuffle and honestly I wasn't paying much attention but then this came one and threw me back in time! Has it really been so long since I've listened to this? I LOVE IT! Easily Fatboy Slim dopest scratches. In my state of marginal sobriety I felt as if he was literally scratching vinyl on my brain....twisted! Everyone is capable of creative thought, they just have to think outside the box. Its a beautiful phenomenon that strikes spontaneously. It is your duty however to choose what you want to do with this thought. Let it fade away and be forgotten or work with it to create something innovative if not new. Jimi Hendrix did the latter.

His music wasn't just rock and roll, it was something completely different. Poetic lyrics and dreamy tunes, his art was deep, metaphorical and very philosophical (albeit most were just drug-induced rambling). Nonetheless he's an inspiration to be different, creative and original. With that I leave you with one of my fav's of his, the wind cries Mary!

New York Fashion Week: my only favorites...

Fashion week felt really somber. Maybe its just me, but everything felt and looked a tad conservative. Whats happening? Richard Chai's selections looked as bland and pasty as the models wearing them. Max Azria's BCBGMAXAZRIA collection looked like everything was dipped in beige. Seriously...I know its the fall collection but where's the flair, the sheen, the plaids atleast?!

But nonetheless, a few designers got it right. Here are my two favorite picks:

Duckie Brown!
Design duo Steven Cox and Daniel Silver produced yet another beautiful collection reflecting their punk rock meets urban chic vibe. Their signature heavy scarves weren't as visible as their past shows but naturally made an appearance. I fell in love with their multicolored microtweed selections! Absolutely gorgeous. My only complaint were their seemingly "too late" moment with their plaid selections. Sorry guys, but its not 2007!

MIK CIRE by ERIC KIM
If you thought Monarchy had an edgy attitude, you've got to see Designer Eric Kim's Mik Cire label! Made for a true rocknrolla, Mik Cire's collection is a resounding echo of Kim's badass approach to look. Its rough, raw but at the same time refined. His tight-fitted biker jackets, waxed zipper jeans and knee high boots reflect the attitude you'll only find in a 1%er biker bar. Acompany to style was the impeccable sheen of the clothing. I may be bias here, but if it shines, i want it!

Well lets not be too judgy yet. This morning I woke up to a text from a friend saying Alexander McQueen had died from an apparent suicide. Suddenly I felt a dark cloud cloaked over my day.

The man was a genius and profound influence on the fashion world. His designs were revered as some of the most beautiful in contemporary history. Sadly, now the world will never see another piece from him. The Mercedez Benz New York Fashion week is finally here! Oh how happy I will be! Seven whole days of seeing aesthetic beauty and luxurious fabrics dragged across a runway by scrawy, under-fed men and women. Its truly an eye opener. If anyone has passes please don't be mean and hit me up!

Why am I so excited anyways? Well I'm always fond of the F/W shows more than anything. Its my favorite fashion season and definitely helps me subdue my constant shopping addiction by giving me a chance to see what might end up in my closet the coming months.

Anyways I'm excited and can't wait to see the shows. What I'm most excited about is Diesel, Phillip Lim, G-Star Raw and Duckie Brown. All are incredible brands composed of incredible designers and naturally, incredible clothing.

Well anywhoo, I will keep you all updated on what I see and like. I've made some predictions and praying they are correct(such as the heavy emphasis on military styles, more solid, shiny fabrics, more rugged styled shoes etc)!

Also, to all my female readers, I'm sorry but I won't be divulging much into women's wear for obvious reasons but I'm sure you can check out my good friend and fellow blogger Angie here for her opinions on whats hot in the chicks section!

Adios friends, and enjoy the week!

What plays in these cold winter nights...

Thats Right yall, The Fresh Price and DJ Jazzy Jeff! I may not always look like a fashion-minded person but its one of my great passions. Unfortunately a crappy part-time job doesn't really give me the freedom to walk through boutique doors as regularly as I'd like and hunting sample sales is like seeking out a unicorn in Times Square. In comes Gilt, a semi-exclusive online club that caters to the needs of us busy, mid-earning folks out here.

Specializing in designer brand sample sales, gilt.com offers an average of 5 or so new brands per day equally for men and women. These can include clothing, accessories, jewelery, leather goods, home decor and even personal grooming products. I LOVE IT! The gear is usually about 50% and up to 70% off which practically blows store and boutique competition away!

My biggest complain though is the random item availability and shipping time. Items can vary considerably. For example I had bought two cardigans (one by Edun and one by KZO) and a Monteverde Pen. My cardigans arrived within the week's end but the pen took over a month to arrive. It can be a pain in the ass especially if you're buying the item for a time specific occasion but other than than this is pure gold people.

Also, another thing that irked me was that you have to sign up and then wait to be invited to join. Not a big deal but it feels a bit pretentious. If you do plan on joining though, here's a member invite that speeds things up for ya.

http://www.giltman.com/invite/greggyc - this gives you access to both men and women's sales.

Jimmy Choo: the H&M collection

H&M is by far the most accessible European fahion company within the U.S. but in all honesty it has never been my favorite brand. In fact, it would be just to say my history shopping there has been no more than a collection of let downs. Its not really cause of their styles(which are often fabulous and fashion forward), but more so due to their flimsy textiles and materials used. An example: I once bought a pair of cashmere gloves for a day of ice skating only to have them literally disintegrate about 2 hours in. Since then I've kept by distance for the sake of my money and fear of a "wardrobe malfunction" but looks like I'll soon be lured back.

H&M recently hopped on the bandwagon of the collab trends. Last year they teamed up with legendary designer Roberto Cavalli for a full women's collection that was a huge success and now their are teaming up with the equally great Jimmy Choo for another run for success. Thankfully, this time around there are womens AND mens!

This is a very aggressive move by both parties. H&M being that they are introducing(at least I hope they are) premium fabrics and material for their garments which will probably mean a higher production cost hence higher retail cost and Choo added a men's line to a name completely devoted to womens fashion and also risking his reputation by expanding his business in lower cost, mass production(meaning most of his stuff will probably be machine made/stitched instead of traditional handmade) markets he has not experienced yet. Nonetheless its a risk they're willing to take and judging by some sample shots, they hit the nail on its head. Check it out!

Fellas time to sharpen up that closet!

Things that irritate me: When Hollywood runs out of ideas.

Just a second ago I went on hulu to see if I can catch up on my missed shows from last night. Well to my surprise I came across a trailer for a new Jake Gyllenhaal/Toby Maguire film called "Brothers." The synopsis sounded eerily familiar so I clicked and watched the 2 min trailer. Lo and behold, this is another remake!

ughh... I hate you Hollywood! What I saw was the Americanized version of a BEAUTIFUL Danish film I saw a few years back similarly named "Brodre." The set up was interesting and not really gonna get into details but its about an army man who gets shipped off and captured in Afganistan during the war. His family is told he is deceased and his wife, amidst her suffering seeks refuge in her brother-in-law, a sort of lose cannon bum of a guy.

Seriously though, couldn't they just dubbed the film and release it limited in the US. I hate when Hollywood does that shit. I mean Gyllenhaal and Maguire and great actors as is Natalie Portman but I'm always let down when I see remakes, often times cause the new director would take or add something that would alter the film on some level.

Its one thing when its done from a book since it would be something only imagined and hence replaced or changed with a visual reproduction but when I already have a perfect film burned into my mind, I can't help but hate whatever possible "tweaks" may have been done.

Since Oscars season about to kick off as all our beloved drama, satire and art films come trickling down, I'm curious to see what Jim Sheridan pulls out his hat. Until then I recommend you film-lovers to head out to your dvd spot or netflix(I do not endorse piracy! :P) and check out Brodre...heres the original trailer. Then maybe you can size up both films.

THIS is a waterfight!

Hecq Vs Exillion - Spheres Of Fury from Tim.Chris.Film on Vimeo.

Water fights are awesome summer events. Even with no dialogue it speaks volumes and the emotions are so strong I must commend the actors for creating such an impressive piece of satire. check it out!

A Platonic Love Note

Who knew I write poetry! From Monday through Friday I've been bouncing back and forth class, work, party, class, work, poker etc...but looking back, it was a great though stressful week.

To recap: Monday I found out I passed my Math exam, Tuesday I followed up on some good job leads, Wednesday I did two presentations perfectly, Thursday work and the Yankee's took one home for us(well it was Wednesday night into Thursday :D), Friday I spent the whole day doing a research paper and Saturday I whooped ass in Beer pong and won(like a 10 game winning streak, one lost and the most dramatic comeback in the history of the game!). Yup it was a good week! and After a relaxing and easy day at work I'm ready for whatever this week has for me! LETS GO!

The Regular Guide: Whiskey

There are three things necessary for a great night out: good spot, good people and damn good drinks. Sadly, time and time again I find myself in the presence of these pretentious, sugar laced sissy drinks that just ruin the other two. For this reason I almost always order one specific drink I trust that will not make my pinky raise as i sip it: WHISKEY!

Forget that silly belief of whiskey's roots in southern USA, it is the place of many of America's favorite brands but the drink's history is just as blurry as the way it usually leaves you on a good night. It's believed it was brought to Spain in the 6th-7th century from the east and slowly spread across Europe until finally landing in the new world. Well now its time to take that trip around the globe again as I explore my personal 5 favorite Whiskeys that won't break the bank!

Jack Daniel's Old No. 7
No one should be surprised this baby is on the list. There isn't a single out liquor out there as beloved, iconic AND badass as Jack's Old No. 7. This is pretty much my party starter and ender. If you've been living in a cave or for some reason never heard of or had this one, I suggest you end your suffering with haste. The sour mash leaves it a tad bitter and I recommend you order it up on the rock to diffuse the sting.

Jameson 12 Year Old Special Reserve Irish Whiskey
Simple and smooth, this is one hell of an even-blended Irish Whiskey. I've seen time and time again amateurs shooting this in a bar or at parties. Why?! Best way to capture both the aroma and taste: pour a half-glass then add a fifth to a quarter of room temperature water, you'll experience a whole new sensation!

Johnnie Walker 15 Year Old Green Label
The drink of gents, Johnnie Walker has be around forever. This specific blend includes whisky aged for no less than 15 years. It golden color and smoky aroma asserts its smooth taste. Its one of those few drinks I take straight, no ice no chaser. It you're a usual whisky or scoth drinker this deserves to be in your cabinent.

Evan Williams Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey
Bourbon is by far one of the most distinct types of American whiskeys. Similar to Scotch it is aged in charred barrels. However, unlike other types out there it is made of 2/3 corn. In my experience, this gives it a very sharp biting taste. Not necessarly a bad thing but more than often I find bourbons tasteless, over shadowed by the coarseness and alcohol. In comes Evan Williams, a slightly sweet, slightly sour but still very edgy enough to enjoy on the rocks. Plus its the cheapest on the list!

Glenfiddich 15 Year Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Another scoth whisky. I've only had this two times, both times I felt inebrated about four glasses in. I recommend this dime for those night caps or evening events where you won't be driving yourself home :)

Other recommendations
Jack Daniel's Gentle Jack: refined, a tad less edgier. Order up a glass to keep busy when at those boring black tie occasions.

Wild Turkey: uhh night out with the boys? Order up those shots of the cheap but good stuff!

Chivas Regal: I remember my dad always kept a bottle of this and I never knew why until I finally was old enough to drink. Its pricey, classy and always a hit on poker nights.

Things that irritate me: Moments when facebook and twitter turn into a sports blog!

I get it. The Yankees won. I will read about it tomorrow in practically every major newspaper. I'll see it on the morning and evening news, on the radio station, on HBO sports, all the late night talkshows and during small chat at work. BUT I DO NOT NEED THAT SHIT ANNOUNCED TO ME ON EVERY SOCIAL NETWORK! Ugh, sorry, I know you're all my friends and what not, but please when you and 300+ people change your status to just announce game four's results, you're doing nothing more than annoying me.

Don't abuse your status and tweets on such trivial news. Why announce such an obvious fact when you can instead promote a cause, express a personal opinion (and by that I mean something of actual substance and not some kind of hateful smack talk to the opposing team and fans), etc. As the team just won a game and made millions of dollars, drew in fan support and sell their beautiful merchandise, somewhere out in the world are others with no tv, no food or water and no clue about baseball. So next time you think about cheering for your "heroes," think about how you could've been someone else's hereo.

Things that irritate me: Ignorant people + the current economic state!

Guess its a two for one special right now cause this is about to be a dual topic post! Anyways, this came about today as I was at work(at an Automotive parts and repair store). For some reason it was "Ask-a-dumb-question-then-debate-the-fact-with-a-specialist day" cause for several hours all I got was a bunch of cocky idiots arguing technical knowledge with me. However, there were two guys who really stood out and almost made me realize how shitty the economy is right now.

Lets start with customer X who I didn't sell anything to but instead had 3 separate conversations with over the phone for at least 12 minutes at a time. He first called about a battery for a Jeep Grand Cherokee I believe. After explaining the cheapest battery I had was $90 which was a sale price down from $125., he kept asking me how to lower the price. I told him straight there's nothing I can do. He called again asking about alternative options, I told him we can try to charge it which would cost him $20. or he can try to jump it. Again it was too expensive for him, he wanted us to tow his car to our shop to do a $14 battery test(we do not provide tow services period). The third time he calls to ask me if the battery he had in another car could work. I explained to him the risks involved and recommended he not try that and he countered me with stories of his friend using a Civic battery in a Pick-up. Well I have no idea what he did but I gave up and hung up on him out of exhaustion.

A second customer came in looking for a battery for a 2007 Hyundai Accent. I told him we didn't have the battery model. He refused to take no for an answer. He argued with me, my store manager, my shop managers and other colleagues. I recommended a universal battery that would do the job but its beyond his budget. He settles with a tiny $60 battery and went to cash out. Now he's $5 short and starts arguing that we should advertise prices with taxes cause apparently he was fooled and amazed that our store charges taxes(seriously?) and in the end leave.

These two observations really taught me something: Idiots + this recession = the most arrogant and stubborn assholes on planet earth! I was seriously so pissed off with both these fellas, wasted my fucking time because they couldn't fantom paying a day's wages for fix their cars. WHY ARE YOU DRIVING MORONS?! Even more I realize how horrible this economy is right now, I have customers making life decisions everyday. To drive or to eat? This shit needs to stop!

Musical Beauty - Nino Moschella

Depending on your awareness of indie music scene, hearing Nino Moschella's name will either have you super excited to the point of hyperventilation or leave you staring in oblivion. The Californian crooner has been on the scene for quite some time and really blew up big with his collabs with Shawn Lee' Ping Pong Orchrestra. My guess is his most popular song is probably "Kiss the Sky" which although never commercially pushed was featured on numerous TV and film soundtracks. It's quite beautiful, check it out! And if you enjoyed it, check out his albums The Fix and Boomshadow!

November = 30 days of mustache madness!

November is the definite man-month aka Mustache month! Ordered up the 10 piece wings dipped in 911 sauce and a side of curly fries to fill up the gut and all I have to say is Woah mamajamma!!!

I've been going to Hooters for years only indulging in their original mid-level spicy so I felt courageous last night and ordered in their mouth scorcher. It was a delightful change especially since I have ridiculous capacity for super hot food. On a scale from 1-10 the heat was about a 5 or 6 in my book (which translates to about 8-9 for most people). The only thing I hated was the strong tobasco/vinegar scent but I guess you can't have the world.

By then end the bill was about $70 between us which isn't too bad considering we were all stuffed to our throats! His metaphors, analogies, rhyme and syllabic structures amazes me!

Poetry has not always been an art I gravitate to as much as literature but the way Neruda's poetry reads, I found myself fixated on his verses for hours(and even more time spent translating those hard-to-understand lines). These are brief guides to eating, drinking, living etc etc within our working class means. No pretension, no bullshit! Now lets go on this edition: BEERS!

Beer is the world oldest and most consumed alcoholic beverage. A delicious blend of hops, barley, malt etc, fermented for various times and best served cold, beer is a beautiful thing, and today I give you all a run down on my five favorites that won't break the bank.

Lets start with a brief lesson. Beers are broken down into two main groups: ales and lagers. Ales are top-fermented beer, lagers are bottom-fermented. Basically, their difference is based on the type of yeast used and the fermenting period. Ale are fermented high temperatures for a few weeks to a month and generally have a sweet, full bodied taste while lagers are fermented is much colder environment for months at a time with an end result of a crispier and sharper flavor.

Best of the Best:

1: Guinness
The magnificent Irish Stout! A lot of people may argue the taste of this beer but I find it to be delicious and extremely smooth. I recommend draught over its bottled counterpart for enhanced smoothness. To those trying it for the first time...remember the two minute waiting rule!

2: Brooklyn Lager

Brooklyn Brewery is New York's very own brewing gem. They produce some of the most impressive albeit hard to find beers. However, their reputation is increasingly growing and nowadays The Brooklyn Lager can be found almost everywhere around NYC. This Amber-colored beer pours and drinks smoothly, a good opener for a Friday night on the town!

3: Samuel Adams Boston Lager

By far one of the most popular All-American brews, the Boston Lager is a crisp, dark amber beer known for its sharp, distinct taste. Bonus points when you use it as the base of a black and tan!

4: Samuel Adams Summer Ale

A full and almost fruity flavor, Sam Adams takes the cake for well blended and perfectly aged beer. Most common during the warmer months (duhh) its sweet and mellow flavor will keep your taste buds occupied for hours at a time.

5: Heineken

Its impossible to choose a good Dutch brew. Heineken and Becks are both exceptional pale lagers but Heineken wins from the slight bump in bitterness. I love that bitter biting sensation that comes with every gulp. Becks is good for the ladies but guys, grow some balls and order up a Heine!

Other hard to finds:
Kirrin Japanese Lager: Only place I ever had this mild pale brew was in this awesome Yakaturi Restaurant down in St. Marks: Yakaturi Taisho.

Brooklyn Brewery Chocolate Stout
Mmm, don't you love that stout! Goodluck on finding this guy, you'll have to seek out those specialty pubs or visit the Brewery.

Carib Lager
The beer of the Caribbean, I grew up watching the folks enjoy this brew. I have no idea how or where to find this in New York.

Carib Shandy
Shandies are a blend of lager and special fruit juices. My favorite is sorrell and by the grace of God I found it the other day in my local supermarket.

Pilsner Urquell
The original Pilsner, smooth and delicious. This beer is pretty popular but definitely not common sight in your bodegas or supermarket.

Random Goodtimes: The Subway Inn

Last night was a good night! After a long and stressful day which included work, homework, schoolwork, a 4 hr class and horrible weather I met up with Jeff who was having an equally tiring day. It was time to unwind and like the classy gentlemen we are we decided to hit up that dark seedy dive bar off 60th and Lex. WHAT A GOOD CALL!

I've only been there once before for a quick after work drink and didn't really take in the atmosphere. Guess second time's the charm. We grabbed a seat, ordered up a Guinness AND scotch on the rocks each to start(yes two drinks each person at the same time, don't ask why..) and let the goodtimes roll. Soon we met a couple other regulars and in no time conversations were in full swing!

Now for starters, Subway Inn is right on E60th and Lex, tucked in on the side of Bloomingdales. Unlike its neighbor, its everything but classy. For what I've been told, its been serving patrons since 1937 and that sounds just about right. Everything in there is vintage! There's no real theme per say, just a mash-up of furniture and decor that seem to span various eras. For example, a poster of Marilyn Monroe sits next to a Stewey Griffin doll, or plush red leather stools next to an old worn out counter top.

As awkward and random as it feels, I'm strangely attracted to the environment. There's no pretentiousness, no weak drinks, friendly bartenders and patrons and an awesome Jukebox. Oh and lets not forget the one good thing about dive bars: good prices. Now I know this doesn't cut the cake like Continental and Bar None and the likes, but with $5 Guinness and Straight drinks(not shots) you can't go wrong. We were drinking to good health and before you know it we were on our third round of Guinness and Scotch combo. Before leaving my friend bought a round of 151 and i swear the shot glass was HUGE.

Well once done I stumbled out and magically made my way home. A good night indeed!

Musical Truth - Tiron - Throwing my Money

Just check the song out... can't agree more!

TiRon "Throwing My Money" [Official Video] from The Cafeteria Line on Vimeo.

Rant: Balloon Boy Hoax/Fiasco

A friend of mine had recently changed her status to reflect a funny post she had read on textsfromlastnight.com :

" (917): half the nation just spent an hour watching a balloon fly around. we are officially the dumbest fucking country."

I couldn't agree more! This would pit its creation somewhere around the early to mid 19th century. This makes sense since the traditional European garment has been famous for many, many generations. It's popularity among the upper class is undeniable and has even been associated with gentlemanly attire. However that has drastically changed!

These days cardigans are as common as tees and they are often worn along with tees. And with this new found relaxation of the style comes an onslaught of urban chic. As of fall 09 I'm pretty confident every label, big or small, department or designer has released at least one cardigan in their collection. This is great being that no matter what your "taste" is, you can find something that fits both your look and checkbook.

Unfortunately this also means possible fashion fiascoes! Here's a brief guide to what I usually look for in a cardigan:

Fabric
YES: Knits rock! Maybe I'm picky, but i love my knits! The best money can buy is Cashmere wool, then Merino wool and lambs wool. To a lesser extent there is cotton that tend to be much more durable especially for frequent use while maintaining a chic look. You can also get those thick cotton cardigans that can be worn as outwear.

NO: Jersey cotton sucks! Call me a hater if you must but the fabric, though strong often gives the garment a pale and overly vintage look. It can also be too rough or thick for some.

Pattern/design
YES: Solid colors or two toned patterns! Can you tell I'm a believer in minimalism? I think the best cardigans are solid colors. It can automatically define you overall look if paired with the right garb. However, if you want to add a little flair, grab a two-toned checkered or stripped cardigan to go with with you outfit, just remember to keep the patterns small.

NO: Flamboyant designs and prints! Do I really need to explain this on? Just avoid those grandma knits or crazy patchwork and prints as seen on Ecko and sadly Tim Hamilton silk experiments.

Cut
YES: tailored cut, sits on the hips! That's just how it should be, end of story. More so cardigans can be stitched to be either high or deep "V"ed, either is great, though I prefer deep.

NO: Bathrobe looking thing of horror! It can probably be pulled off by extremely skinny dudes but for a guy like me, I'll pass.

Other things to consider
Shawl cardigan: I love shawl cardigan! They add that extra bit of class to the occassion.

Rugby and varsity cardigans: These usually come in heavy pattern knits with different colored armbands and can add a good deal of character to the wearer.

Zip cardigans: These are tricky, I personally avoid them but its all up to personal opinion.

Double breasted cardigans: As much as I love the look of these, I have a hard time choosing how to wear it. The perfect scenario would be something like a casual morning weekend out with the family...not too businessish, not too casual, just enough classy

DOs

Clockwise from top left: Obey, House of Cassette, JohnVarvatos, im King

Don'ts

Clockwise from top left: OAK, Akademeks, Diesel

Musical Beauty - Angelique Kidjo: Summertime

Anyone who knows me knows i have the weirdest tastes in music. Her music is extremely diverse, ranging from afrikana to pop to soul, i can find a Kidjo song to express any feeling! Here's a sample, its called Summertime and though you'll probably never know what she's singing about, its one of the most relaxing songs ever to hit my ears...ENJOY!

Need a vacation....

Different people deal with stress differently, whether you punch a pillow, scream it out, punch a wall or do more illicit things, we all find a way to cope with our problems. However, the worst thing to do is ignore it, and that's what I've been doing for the longest time.

And I think its time to STOP THAT SHIT! What I'm stressed out I have no idea, think it's a combination of home, school and work as well as the constant thought of my future. I really haven't figured out what I want to do or where I want to go after college. Most likely I'll be doing something film or writing related, just not sure what.

Anyways, like I said I need a vacation! Every time I make plans something always comes up, it's almost as if I'm cursed and forced to stay cooped up in NY...smh but where, thats the question! First I wanted to hit up Mexico, now I might either go to Guyana or Florida, not totally sure yet but I guess we'll find out soon!

Tech Goodies: Canon 7D DSLR

Canon Eos 7D - MSRP: $1899 w/ starter kit or $1699 body only

I won't call myself a techie in anyway but being an individual that uses electronic gadgets on a daily basis I must admit there's a soft spot in my heart for them. More so I'm a Film student which means my educational investment and future career prosperity is pretty much dependent on my knowledge in and ability to operate all these cutting edge technology. So with that in mind, lets talk about the Canon 7D dslr camera!

If you are in anyway a fan of photography, the buzz about this camera has probably been booming in your ears for months now. Canon newest addition to the eos family has kept a constant flow of drool down the side of my mouth since I caught air of the news about 3 months ago.

What makes this so special is the fact it not only functions as a camera, it can record in full 1080p resolution at different frame rates including 24p. Not gonna get into the heavy specifics and description here but to break it down, this means that, providing you a have a quality canon lens, can shoot DIGITAL video that will appear similar to FILM footage. The beauty though is that the canon lens provides a short depth of field that gives it the look of PROFESSIONAL cameras (like those Arriflex that can cost you an arm, leg and ballsack!). This is a great breakthrough for indie filmmakers!

Extremely small, flexible and easy to mod with a multitude of accessories complements of both Canon and many other third party providers (everyone from Audio-Technica to Zacuto) this little underdog is soon to be crowned the King of cheap, no-budget indie films in no time! i personally cannot wait to buy mines, hopefully within the month or maybe next, all i know is when I'm done it will look something like this:

BEASTMODE!

Greggy Sees: Fashion vol.1 - The Asymmetrical fad

So what is asymmetrical? Its when something, anything, is not equal on both sides. Its also the hotest aesthetic of fashion right now!

Now I’m not really sure where or how this style originated, but my first sightings of this cut was featured on Maison Martin Margiela’s f/w 08 with very light accentuations in a variety of their double breasted coats. By Spring 09 Diesel(who owns the Margiela label) began capitalizing the look on their black gold label and before you know it, every one and their mother began making these irregular zip and button coats.

Now I’m pretty sure this is one of those aesthetics that may have been around for a while but non the less its becoming incredible annoying! I understand the rough appeal that some styles may gain with wide lapels and asymmetrical zippers, but it seems like some just pushing it to the extreme. Here are some examples:

Do’s

Alexander McQueen - edgy and simple, it gives the wearer a snug fit and definition throughout the upper body

Don’ts

Juicy Couture Men - Way too much leather wasted. The button are over kill!

So there you have it…it is a good style to feed the inner badboy but just make sure you choose wisely when picking out that coat or jacket! I won't judge you i promise!

Greggy Sees: Food! vol. 1: Phaal Curry Challenge

A few weeks ago I celebrated my birthday at Brick Lance Curry House, a neat little Indian cuisine restaurant down on E6th between 1st and 2nd ave. At first glance I didn’t expect much from this narrow establishment but boy was I wrong. The food is DELICIOUS! Now I’m not totally aware of the names of everything I tasted that night but I got my heart’s fulfilment of a little bit of everything they had to offer.

First we got some delicious crunchy kind of split peas based crackers for appetizers that instantly hinted the spicy adventure ahead. I suddenly felt compelled to prove my manliness so I opted for the chicken tikka phaal curry along with my good friend Joe, garlic naan and some incredible tasting mango smoothie kinda drink. What followed was a wild ride of fiery goodness!

Firstly, phaal curry is regarded as one of the spiciest curries in the world! It’s made of 12 or so different peppers and apparently, based on Man vs Food the chefs require gas masks to whip this baby up! Ehh, I CAN DO IT!

And I did! I went at it like a champ, mouthful after mouthful, i kept dosing the brewing flames with the smoothie back and forth. With so many explosives pepper seeds, I can hardly even recall the specific taste of the curry. At first I could definitely taste the Marsala but after a while it just disappeared or got engulfed by just the burning sensation of peppers. At one point my face was a bright pink but somehow I managed to clean my plate.

In the end i got what i went there for: a certificate with my name on it, a free beer, a spot of bricklane’s “phaal of fame”, and bragging rights! It was quite the experience and I recommend any and everyone who’re looking to “spice up” their palate to try this atleast once!

Pros:

New food experience for those unfamilar with indian cuisine

An adventure for fellow spice and pepper lovers

Cons:

The “curry taste” tends to disappear in the peppery heat

Might break the bank since my personal bill was about $30something plus tip

Greggy C and Joey Joe after our successful completion

Soo, you've found me!

Who am I you ask? No, no, no, the question is who am I not? I’m not a rocket scientist, nor am I a medical doctor. I am no more than a face in a sea of lonesome individuals, urbanites so tightly connected within social circles and networks than they have become dissociated with the world outside them. Ever felt like that? Maybe I’m like you, or maybe you’re like me?

These days I feel as if society has become a giant oxymoron: as we become more technologically connected, we lose the ability to experience meaningful interactions with others beyond our circle. I guess its the great irony of life. Nowadays we seek comfort in our mp3 players instead of an old-fashion face to face with an interesting character on the bus or train. Even in a club we often find ourselves reluctant to indulge in physical contact with those we don’t know.

I don’t blame anyone, with each stride forward we will leave something behind. And this is where this blog comes in. I dare you readers to go out and re-experience a way of life that seems lost. Specifically my fellow New Yorkers, follow me as I highline the ups and downs of this great city, come out, socialize and experience, whether it be in a seedy dive bar on St. Marks or a lavishly decorated lounge in the meatpacking district, this is a note of encouragement to go out and “cop a feel” or this beautiful city.

And ofcourse, to engage in these debauchous activities you’ll need the right gear. So to equip my fellow readers with what’s needed, you can find snippets of all the fads and fashion on here as the come and go! Thank you and visit regularly!
